If you have a shapefile that is consisting of a large amount of information, somehow it makes your software works harder and longer. Most of the time, you only need to work in a specific area of interest (AOI). This means you don’t need the other information, you simply want to extract or export your area only. Therefore, here are the easy steps :

(For a disclaimer, QGIS version used is 3.4.4-Madeira for this article)

  1. Input your dataset

In this case, I have downloaded Indonesia administrative border. So I have the shapefile of every province.

Shapefile of Indonesia

2. Select and execute your area of interest (AOI)

I only want to process Sulawesi administrative border. So I do not want to process the other area. Then I start by opening the attribute table. Go to layer bar, then right-click “Open Attribute Table”.

Then, here is the attribute table containing the table of ID, code, Province and Source.

Attribute Table

Select the area that you want to process. You can press “Control” or “Shift” if you want to select more than one row.
