Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) is an effort that obtained Digital Elevation Model (DEM) in a global scale. It is considered as one of the high-resolution digital topographic database in Earth. The other option is ASTER GDEM that is released in 2009. The important characteristic of SRTM are:

  1. Spatial resolution : 11 day
  2. Start operation : February 2000
  3. Spatial resolution : 30 meters
  4. Area coverage : Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Australia
  5. Format : .hgt
  6. Producer : US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and NASA

SRTM Database is accessible in Google Earth Engine. Google Earth Engine is pretty effective for handling large datasets and for analyzing trends in rich time-series. GEE is using basic Javascript programming.

Firstly, find the SRTM Database in the search box. There are several options of dataset. It depends on the purpose of the processing. In this exercise, we are going to search for SRTM Digital Eleveation Data 30m. Import the data or copy the Collection Snippet.

Then add Layer to the interactive Map. The first map will portray a plain grey picture.
